Personalize Your Hospital Birth Space for an Empowered Experience
As a Birth Doula I have found that my labor clients really love these 5 easy hacks that helped them transform their hospital rooms into a space that felt more relaxing!
Hack One: Bring your favorite pillow, blanket or whatever is your soft, comfort item.
*Pro Doula Tip: Bring a colored pillow case so your pillow does not get mixed up with hospital pillows!
Hack Two: Bring familiar scents along with you! It doesn't necessarily need to be essential oils. Other familiar scent from your favorite products like lotions, deodorant, bath salts are all great choices and can help you feel grounded.
Hack Three: Swap the hospital provided gown for a loose dress, soft gown, or any other comfortable attire that makes you feel good.
*Pro Doula Tip: It is totally okay to wear nothing at all! It is your space, you are allowed to do what makes you feel comfortable!
Hack Four: Lights! Lighting matters!! I recommend bringing string lights, LED candles, salt lamp, whatever soft lighting you find comforting.
*Pro Doula Tip: Gentle, soft lighting also comforting after baby is born!
Hack Five: Surround yourself with comforting sounds! I recommend packing a portable speaker, headphones or even a sound machine.
*Pro Doula Tip: Having soothing background noise can soften the sounds of the hospital staff in the hallways and medical equipment in the room.
Bonus Tip
Adding a Doula to your birth team can really help with the mood of the room! As a Doula I pay attention to the little things that make a big difference like making sure the door is closed, making sure you have a fresh full bottle of water, and offering tips in the moment to help you feel more at ease and comfortable!
